The Sferisterio of Macerata is the most characteristic and representative monument in this town, certainly is the most beautiful among many “sferisterios” in Marche, Umbria and Tuscany. It was built between 1823 and 1829 thanks to the contribution of hundred families in Macerata (how we can see on the big inscription on the front of the building), which wanted to give to the town a permanent structure for the “pallone col bracciale” game (an old handball kind of sport very popular in Italy at the time).

The building has been projected by the versatile architect Ireneo Aleandri and takes its name from the particular diagram semicircle shaped. The most impressive image is surely the inside sight: a very big area (90 x 36 mt) delimited by two rectilinear headings linked by an ample curve and by a support wall used for the “palla col bracciale” game.

The public takes his place on the three staircase levels, placed over the platform of the building, or in the double line of dais placed over the staircase; on the top we can find a great terrace where we could enjoy a wonderful town landscape. The building has a maximum capacity of 2800 people and it is famous from 1921 for the Opera summer season called at the beginning “Macerata Opera”, then turned into “Sferisterio Opera Festival” and at last, from 2012, it changed in “Macerata Opera Festival”.
