Castelsardo is a small town in the Sassari province with
almost 6000 inhabitants. It is
in Sardinia, in the center of the Golfo dell'Asinara
Thanks to it great geographical position, this town has been one of the first human settlements in Sardinia already in the era precent to nuraghi, in the period of nuraghi and then in the roman period.
After the fall of the Roman Empire the city remains under the Papal State. Few steps from the town it is possible to see still today the very important benedectine monastery of Tergu which is still object of archeological studies.
In 1270, when the city was under the domination of the Genoa family Doria, the famous castle was built.
The current name of the city comes from 1767 when the city was under the Savoy
domination and it was given to it by Vittorio Emanuele III.
The city is reknown for its cookery with 58 restaurants of which at least 6 are considered excellent ones, especially the ones along the coast.
Typical in the city are the events which occur all around the year. At Christmas and New Year Eve the city organizes events with very known musicians, for the holy week the city organizes Pasquetta in Musica in addition to very suggestive religious processions. In September you will have the "Navicella Sardegna" award where important people are awarded with the reproduction of a nuraghi bronze made in silver by a local artist, Bruno Busonera.
The entire summer is filled with animation of various kind in addition to the exhibitions which is possible to visit in the sity.
The city was included in the list of the Borghi Pił Belli d'Italia (Most charming villages of Italy).
The nearest airports are Alghero (50 Km away) and Olbia (100 Km away).
The nearest ports from which you can reach Castelsardo are Porto Torres (30 Km away) and Olbia (90 Km away).
The city also has a charming marina.
