Despite the name, this city of 17,000 citizens is at 250 meters from the sea level.
Sant'Elpidio a Mare is a true treasure chest which deserve a visit in your tour of the region Marche.
The city dates from the IX century, the rests of the walls are dated XII and XIII century and they enclose many monuments of great interest.
Very interesting is the Basilica Lateranense di Maria Santissima della Misericordia, a small church full of artistic treasures. On the outside you can see a wooden door with two sundials on top. Inside the Church has paintings from 1600 and frescos of the same period. There are also two organs of the XVIII century. This church is the seat of the Accademia Organistica Elpidiense.
The Torre Gerosolimitana is in the highest spot of the city and was built by the Knights of Malta in the XVI century. It is 28 meters high and its plant recalls the maltese cross. Later a clock was plased on the tower, on top of a monument dedicated to the most important characters of the Italian Unit.
In the territory of the city it is also possible to visit Villa Il Castellano. It is a villa built on a Roman outpost which later became a medioeval castle. The central part was rebuilt in the XVII century. Several important people have lived here, amongst themVittorio Emanuele I di Savoia, Gioacchino Murat, Gerolamo Bonaparte . Currently the villa is dedicated to cultural events and classic music concerts.
The second Sunday of August, since 1953, the city holds an historical commemoration with medioeval costumes. The festival is called La Contesa del Secchio, a very suggestive event not to be missed.
The city is very known not only for the artistic beauties but also for the production of famous shoes. In the city you can also visit the Museum of Shoes.
