Civitanova Marche is a city of the Macerata Province with more then 40,000 inhabitants.
The Center of Italy is in itself a point of equilibrium between North and South, the moment in which all cultures meet. The region Marche shows this characteristic even more strongly and the city of Civitanova Marche is probably the kingpin of it.
It is not a classic sea city, this city doesn't empty in September when the sun leaves space to the rain. In this city life continues incessantly all through the year.
The first known human settlements in this area go back to the Paleolitic period. In the VI century the Greeks, who havily used the Adriatic sea for their commerce, used the mouth of Chienti river for their landfall.
On 268 b.C. when the Picenes have been defeated by the Romans, the city, that was called Cluana at that time, became Roman territory.
On 50 a.C. what is now known as Civitanova Alta , one of the districts of Civitanova Marche, was a village known as Cluentis Vicus.
With the invasion by the Visigoths, the city on the coast was destroyed and the few survivors escaped in the Cluentis Vicus, on the hill.
In the second century a. C., the inhabitants started to come closer to the coast, on the hill of San Marone, where, since the second century, there are memories of the saint martyr.
In the following centuries there has been an alternation of different rules, from the Varano from Camerino, to the Malatesta from Rimini, Francesco Sforza from Milano, the Viscontis and finally the family Cesarini from Rome.
On 1440 under the family Sforza, the walls of the city were built and the port was fortified and despite the attacks by pirates, the settlement of fishers and merchants on the coast continued.
In the XVI century the city was hit by the plague which made a massacre of its inhabitants.
Pope Sisto V, at the end of 1500 transformed the Marquisate of the family in a Noble Dukedom and here the city benefited of a period of renaissance and urban renewal.
After a series of event, in 1938, the city hall of Porto Civitanova and the one of Civitanova Alta were united in one only city hall.
On 1507 Annibal Caro, who has translated the Aeneid by Virgilio, was born in Civitanova Marche.
In 1888, at the age of 12, Sibilla Aleramo moved with her family to Civitanova. The writer became famous with her autobiographical book, A Woman. The book is mostly set at Civitanova Marche.
Civitanova Marche today is a very active and productive city.
It has two promenades, the South and North one, both fully equipped with bathing establishments, restaurants and animation. Both the promenades have a cycle path. The sea of Civitanova Marche was several times awarded with the prestigious Blue Flag.
A third cycle path extends from the Port up to Civitanova Alta in a wonderful scenario in the middle of the country side.
There is also the Compagnia di Arcieri di Civitanova Marche (Archers association) since 1983, one of the oldest one in the region Marche.
For the lovers of horce racing there a Race track.
If, instead, you want to spend your time in shopping, there is nothing better then a walk in the streets of the center where it is possible to find very elegant clothes and shoes shops as well as many others. If you prefer markets, instead, every Saturday morning you can walk through more then 100 stands which will surprise you for the quantity and quality of what you can find both if you like vintage or important designers. Every Saturday night in summer, in the Square of the City Hall, Piazza XX Settembre, you will find the Market of Artisanship where you can find laces, plants, handmade painted objects and wonderful bijoux.
Always in the city you can find the factory outlet for the shoes designer Cesare Paciotti, important citizen of this city.
At few kilometers from the city you will also find the factory outlet for TODs and the ones of many other shoes designers as this is the area of main production of shoes in Italy.
In summer there will be events of all kind in the medieval frame of Civitanova Alta with music and arts of all kind.
If you also want to have a look to the surroundings, you will find out Recanati, city of the poet Giacomo Leopardi, Osimo, Castelfidardo, Loreto the seat of the Basilica of the Black Madonna and much more.
And if during your holidays you will feel that you want a pause in the silence of the mountains of Appenines, in less then one hour you can visit Visso, Sarnano and much more.
For the children there is a Luna Park for the evening and the fun on the beach. For the adults who want to enjoy their holidays there are concerts, shows and discos.
As per the food, here you can find everything you wish, from the simple meal with fresh fish on the promenade at accessible prices, to the refined restaurant.
